The Spice Trade’s Forgotten Island

The village of Run at dawn. This island of a thousand people has no phone coverage or cars. Electricity from a private provider only runs for a few hours at night.

Indonesian photographer Muhammad Fadli revealed the story and mood of Run Island by his camera. Surprisingly, this island is an important part of the spice trade history and even closely connected to Manhattan. This interview shows how Muhammad captured the nothingness and tranquility on the island, how he understands the link between past and now, between different places around the global, and between forgotten island and prosperity in European history.
